Review: The Ideal Man by Julie Garwood

The latest installment in Julie Garwood’s collection, The Ideal Man, follows her winning recipe of introducing the female protagonist in conjunction with the major conflict of the plot, quickly followed by the first encounter with the male protagonist. As the plot evolves, minor conflicts also reveal themselves, adding complexity to the tale before the violent plot climax when the minor and major plot conflicts resolve themselves in a rapid succession.

While I find this 322 page tale to be very enjoyable, the relationship between the protagonist characters develops much faster than in Garwood’s past novels. There is a distinct lack of delving deeper into the conflicts of the plot, causing this story to be fast paced but not as satisfying in terms of character development.

The female protagonist’s sarcasm and spirit does bring a nice sense of reality to the story for those of us readers who are not naturally ‘kind’ or ‘sweet’ as a large number of Garwood’s protagonists are portrayed to be.  To warn readers interested in the continuation of the Buchanan family: the only mention of a Buchanan family member appears on page 316.

An Introduction to Julie Garwood

I first discovered one of my favorite authors, Julie Garwood, when I stumbled upon a five dollar hardback copy of Ransom at The Atlantic Book Warehouse while passing through Salisbury, MD.  Unfortunately, the store has since closed, but Ransom remains my favorite book to this day.  I have continued to avidly read Julie Garwood's novels and recommend them to my fellow readers who enjoy tales of romance and either feudal Scotland and England, the wild American West, or modern day American law enforcement heroes. I hope that the following list of Julie Garwood's published novels will assist you, dear readers, in discovering the enjoyable and engaging stories of this author.

Welcome!

Good Tidings Fair Readers!

The Drunken Writer blog is a new endeavor by my faithful contributors and I to bring the fine art of critiquing back to the literary world. Not to worry, dear readers, this will not be an in-depth and pompous review of deep and intellectually confounding literary works. Nay, I will not bore you with such things, but rather provide useful commentary for choosing your next escape from reality. Yes, I do mean to discuss the fabulous world of novels!!

Escapism is an art form, one that has grown prolifically in recent years, though sadly not in quality. Hopefully, this blog will help you navigate your next exotic adventures!
